2004

entering the flock

After closing out 2003 with “my muse is a 5 year old girl”, I took the autobiographical ball as it were, and ran with it. Pretty much all of 2004 was taken up with work on a series of mixed media canvases which incorporated more old photos of me and my family as well as phrases about birds which I had lifted from various bird books. I have always found the lives of birds to be an amazing source of metaphor; especially matters of homing and migration and so they were a natural juxtaposition for me with my old photos. This was the most personal work I had ever done, very powerful and meaningful, and fiercely nostalgic. In the fall of 2004, I had the privilege of traveling to Shanghai, China to take part in a group show at the Duolon Museum which combined works by a number of local BC women artists and an equal number of Chinese women artists. I chose to exhibit pieces from the autobiographical series. One of them remains in China in the museum’s permanent collection.
