13-04 late bloomer cropped2013 was the year of the portrait for sure. In 2012 I did some work using styrofoam stamps which i had carved out of meat trays. These were faces, but not necessarily portraits.  I had no idea at the time, that these graphic faces from 2012 would – one year later – turn into full-blown painted portraits like Eunice and Lois and Betty (see below). In my painting life, 2013 could also be called the year of the 1950s housewife (you don’t see that in the Chinese zodiac). Found photos of women from that period were the basis of a lot of my work in 2013. The women in this work could be my mom; and of course, on some level they ARE my mom which is why i am so drawn to paint them.

But something totally miraculous happened just at the tail end of 2013. It was 13-21 dog spelled backwards croppedChristmas time, when a lot of miracles arrive, and i was moved to paint an image of God and explain how suspicious it is that God is Dog spelled backwards. But then I found out that God is not actually depicted anywhere, and the image I planned to use as the basis of this  last painting of the year, was actually of Jesus and not God. Google had lied to me. I was mid-stream as it were, and felt I had to push on and finish the painting. I sincerely hope that what it lacks in theological accuracy, it makes up for in artistic merit.  I LOVE this painting, and I guess that’s the main thing.
